Voice

Susan, like her Music Works NW colleagues, brings to her teaching not only extensive training and skill but also passion, empathy and a commitment to making each student's experience joyful and empowering. She enjoys working with singers of all ages and all styles of music. Susan's musical training includes a B.A. in Music from Stanford University, M.A. from UCLA, and graduate degree in Opera Performance from the University of Toronto. As vocal faculty at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs she worked primarily with the award-winning theater department there, both performing and teaching. Her performance credits include numerous non-singing roles in Shakespeare and contemporary plays as well as opera, musical theater, and concert work. Favorite roles include Juliet in Gounod's Romeo and Juliet and Maria in “The Sound of Music” with Village Theater. She has been a soloist with the Northwest Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Choral Company, and Seattle Bach Festival. In addition to teaching vocal technique for all styles of music, she is known for her workshops on Performance Skills, Voice for Actors, All About Auditioning (for singers), and the ever-popular “Taming the Wild Nervebeast” for musicians of all instruments.

"I do not remember any more how long I have been studying with Susan, but I feel incredibly lucky to have a wonderful teacher like her. Studying voice with her has enriched my life tremendously, not only by enabling me to have deeper appreciation of music but also by giving me the confidence to express myself more freely. I have also learned a lot from her interactions with her students. Her exuberance and encouragement makes every lesson and every performance so enjoyable, and I always leave wanting to do more and to get better.

I also really appreciate Susan’s enthusiasm for teaching adult students and for giving them opportunities to perform. I think it takes more courage for grown-ups than for little children to get up and sing in front of others. I would not have tried (or persisted so far) without her constant encouragement! Even though it still is not easy, I am loving it and am so grateful for the chance to share my love of singing with others. I only wish more people had the same encouragement and opportunities that she has given me."

"Susan really takes the time to make sure you feel comfortable and she is good about letting you know what your strengths are. She is very funny, nice, and supportive and she is always fun to be around. Susan makes singing fun and at the same time you learn a lot without realizing it.

"I really enjoy my class times with Susan; she is so much fun, and is so relaxing to 'work' (I should say 'play'!) with. I learn a lot, without even realizing it at the time! Susan has wonderful experiences and a vast knowledge that she shares with us at classes, and this makes them even more enjoyable! I highly recommend Susan, if you want someone who is very comfortable to learn with! "
