Ryan Schultz: Principal Tuba from the Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra and other MWNW Brass faculty TBA.
This camp for brass lovers will amaze and delight both participants and parents. Mr. Schultz has a sense of pizzazz working with students and picking musical selections that will push players to perform at high levels in a variety of small and large brass ensembles. In addition, they will learn about important and fun ways to practice, to improve their ear and to increase endurance. This camp is open to Trumpet, Cornet, Trombone, Baritone, Euphonium, French horn and Tuba.
Camp Content:
- Each day will begin with group warm-ups
- Breathing techniques and breath support, performance etiquette, small and large brass ensemble performances
- Skill building, technique, theory, ear training

- There will be a culminating large brass ensemble performance on Saturday, July 10th at 2 p.m..
String Camp

Lauren Hendrix is an energetic fabulous teacher. She has designed an unforgettable week that includes fun, challenging large and small ensemble music, musical teaching games, rhythm and ear training and other activities. This camp dives into performance possibilities for string players other than playing in orchestras such as chamber groups and contemporary music. Music Works NW String faculty will also be assisting on specific instruments during the week. Open to violin, viola, cello and double bass students, ages 10-17, with 2 years of experience on their instruments.
Camp Content:
- Our faculty and guests will work with students in master classes, sectional rehearsals and in a large ensemble to prepare for a performance on Friday, June 25 at 2:00 p.m.
- Daily schedule includes: orchestra rehearsal, technique class (sectional), chamber music, rhythm/ear training, musical theme movie and outdoor activities.
Jazz Camp

Music Works NW Jazz camp is in its 12th year! Many fine artists have performed and taught at this camp and many new artists got started through this program. Bruce Staelens, Camp Director, will help the students to explore the Jazz language, to learn to play and interact with other jazz musicians, and to listen to historically significant recordings and artists to expand the student’s jazz vocabulary. An active free lance performer and educator for many years in New York City, Mr. Staelens has a fervent passion for the music and for teaching young musicians. He has appeared at Birdland, The Blue Note, The Knitting Factory, and Jazz Standard in New York City and has performed with numerous artists including Duke Ellington, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Woody Herman, Ray Charles, Chick Corea, Arturo Sandoval, Natalie Cole and many others, as well as leading his own ensembles, the Smith Staelens Big Band and the Bruce Staelens Quintet. He heads up a camp faculty that will present jazz harmony, improvisation, ensembles, and guest faculty performances, with a final presentation on the last day of camp at around 2:00 p.m. for friends and family.

Have you been taking lessons for 1 year or more? It's time to join a band! This summer, we're looking for musicians ages 8-18 who want to learn what it takes to form a band, record a CD, and play a concert. Rock Shop is open to all musicians. Singers, guitarists, drummers, woodwinds, brass, keyboardists and bassists are welcome. Rock Shop is designed to be a first ensemble experience for young musicians who aspire to form their own bands or participate in junior and high school jazz band. Material includes basic chords, improvisation, and popular songs. Activities include guest artists, clinics, and Friday concert/raffle/pizza party.
Voice Camp

This is the ideal camp for kinds who love to sing!
Camp Director Karen Nestvold has extensive experience in the theater and opera, studio teaching and designing programming for voice in her current role as the Executive Director of the Northwest Girl Choir. She has a love of teaching young people that campers feel long after camp has ended.
Camp Content:
- During the week campers will learn about using their voice as a musical instrument, how to prepare and present a solo, duet or small ensemble piece, and have lots of fun.
- Voice camp repertoire includes songs from musicals, as well as folk songs and classical pieces.
- The camp concludes with a performance for family and friends on Friday, August 6th at 2 p.m.
Pop Voice Camp

THIS IS A GREAT CAMP FOR PRE-TEEN AND TEEN SINGERS THAT LOVE TO SING AND PERFORM POPULAR MUSIC!
Camp Director Kristin Chambers is a professional singer/songwriter/performer with over 15 years of stage experience on both coasts. With an album coming out in June, Kristin’s excitement and energy for her craft is infectious. She looks forward to sharing her knowledge of singing and performing contemporary music with campers throughout the week.
Camp Content:
- During the week campers will be instructed on how to approach popular music with a healthy singing technique!
- Campers will have the opportunity to select songs from a pre-selected current pop repertoire. They will receive one on one vocal and performance tips on their songs and learn how to perform them on a microphone and with a professional band.
- The week will finish with a performance with a live band at Music Works NW, giving singers a chance to share all they’ve learned with friends and family. A live recording will be provided.
- Singers that play guitar or piano and wish to accompany themselves should notify the Camp Director.
Woodwind Camp

The only camp of its kind in the US, Woodwind Camp is returning for its 3rd year on the Eastside! The camp offers a broad musical curriculum designed to interest and intrigue students. The active, fast-paced learning environment is enjoyable and challenging.
Camp Contents:
- Camp begins with wind ensemble rehearsal followed by classes in chamber music, music theory, rhythm, composition, reed making, and advanced ensemble that rotate throughout the week.
- Participants have daily sectionals with their main instructor.
- A unique feature of this camp is that students interact closely with faculty members, enabling developing musicians to observe and to be inspired by the outstanding faculty.
- Fun is not forgotten as musical games delight and interest young musicians.
- Friday’s final concert at 7 p.m. is not to be missed!

Started in Issaquah, WA in the summer of 2007, Clark Grogan and Rob Frain mainly created this camp for music students involved in private lessons who demonstrated an interest in writing their own music and wanted to begin assembling a home recording environment that suited their purposes. The camp consists of two 6-hour sessions over the course of two days. There will beone camp for beginning students and one for intermediate/advanced students. The camp for beginners will focus on loop based composition and getting familiar with composition software such as Garage Band, Ableton Live, and Reason. The camp for intermediate and advanced students uses the same software, but emphasizes more advanced concepts such as programming, composition, and sound design.
